Dad came round on Wednesday night and investigated my pipe work but he could find nothing wrong with it. All the pipes were bone dry, and there was no sign of a leak anywhere. Before he left he gave me his old digital camera. It still works okay, but he has bought a newer model. Over the weekend I'll have to experiment a bit with it.
After work yesterday I went to the cinema and saw "Manderlay", the latest film from Danish director Lars Von Trier. This film forms the centre part of his "USA" trilogy, exploring the darker side of America (the first part of the trilogy was "Dogville"). In "Manderlay" a young white woman (played by Bryce Dallas Howard, taking the role that Nicole Kidman played in "Dogville"), arrives with her father's gangster associates at a Southern plantation called Manderlay, and is shocked to discover that the black labourers are, in fact, slaves. With the help of her associates, she manages to liberate the slaves, imprison the family who own the plantation, and tries to help the people establish a democratic community. The film is shot entirely on a bare stage, with locations picked out by lines on the floor, and minimal props. The film is obvioulsy bound to cause controversy, but it is very good. Von Trier has a go at everyone here, from racist bigots to liberals, who think they know what's best for everyone. It's very intense, but very well-acted, and John Hurt provides some urbane narration which gives the film much needed humour.
After work today I went to take my rubbish out and then discovered I'd locked myself out. I telephone my Dad who has a spare set of keys and he came round to let me back in. He also told me that the guy downstairs had contacted him to let Dad know that he had had plumbers investigating the downstairs flat and discovered that the guys pipework was a mess. It turns out that part of the reson why is to do with the stonework of the building, I think, but to cut a long story short, since it is a communal problem the council will pay for any repairs, but it means that the guy downstairs has to inform everyone in the building that council plumbers will be around to examine and fix everyone's drains. It won't cost anything but there will have to be someone in when the plumber comes. Might mean a day off work, but we'll see when I get the information.
