Last night I watched the film "24 Hour Party People" on DVD. The film was directed by Michael Winterbottom and released in 2002. It basically tells the story of the rise of the independent music scene in Manchester during the 1980s, and the start of the "Madchester" rave scene. The story is seen through the eyes of Tony Wilson (whose played by Steve Coogan) who goes from local TV presenter, to music promoter, and finally to creating the influential Factory Records label. The film showcases Joy Division (who went on to reform as New Order after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis (Sean Harris)) and the Happy Mondays. The film is very funny and entertaining, although the pacing is awkward - the film covers eighteen years and has a large cast of characters - some interesting elements are briefly passed over while the film lingers or less interesting aspects of the story. It was all shot on Digital Video from a partially improvised script. It's possibly one of the most self-referential films ever made: real-life characters appear and contradict what their fictional counterparts have been up to. It's probably the only film ever to refer to it's own DVD in the dialogue.
I went out to the shops today and had a long look around, but I didn't buy anything. It was quite nice though. It's a very warm and sunny day which makes a nice change.
