May. 27th, 2006 01:28 pmLast night I was watching a 1975 film by Dario Argento called "Deep Red". It starred David Hemmings as an English pianist living in Rome who witnesses the brutal murder of a psychic woman who lives in his building. He soon becomes obsessed with tracking down the killer, but it always seems like the killer is always one step ahead and, as the bodies pile up, he realises that he may be a target. It's probably one of the better Argento efforts (Argento has cited this as his personal favourite from his own films, and Alfred Hitchcock was apparently a fan of it) like most of them the film is visually stunning, with superbly orchestrated and elaborately gruesome murders. It does suffer from a typically convoluted plot, although there is more story here then is usual for Argento, and an annoying loud, funky score which sounds more like something from "Shaft" or a seventies TV cop show then a horror film.
I also saw a Korean film called "R-Point", which was kind of a blend of war movie and ghost story. It's set in 1972 during the Vietnam War, where a platoon of Korean soliders go missing on a small island called R-Point. Six months later, the headquarters recieve creepy transmissions apparently from the missing soldiers and another platoon is despatched to investigate. It wasn't really a very good film, and isn't scary at all. To be honest I ended up falling asleep during it.
I had to be up quite sharp today to go out with my dad to try to get my old mobile phone number transferred. The number still hasn't been transferred and I have to call them up again on Tuesday, because it's a Bank Holiday weekend. I am not happy about it!
After that we went and had breakfast. I had smoked salmon and scambled eggs on toast, with a cappuccino, while my dad just had a plain black coffee. Then Dad went home to play golf and I went and bought "Walk the Line" on DVD. I really like that film. I've seen it twice at the cinema, probably the only time I've seen a film twice during it's original theatrical run. On my way home I bought some groceries. This evening I'm going out with my parents and brother to an Italian restaurant to celebrate my Dad's birthday.
