I was watching the film "Fargo" last night, one of the best films from the film-making Coen brothers (Joel Coen directs, Ethan Coen produces and they both write). "Fargo" is set during a snowy winter in Minnesota and tells the story of a struggling car salesman (William H Macy) who hires two criminals (Steve Buscemi - talkative - and Peter Stormare - silent-) to kidnap his wife and use the ransom money from his wealthy father-in-law to get him out of his financial problems. However, of course, the kidnapping quickly leads to murder, and the crime is investigated by the local, heavily pregnant Chief of Police (Frances McDormand - who won an Oscar for Best Actress for the film).
It is one of several great films from the Coen brothers, who are definitely among the most distinctive mainstream film-makers of the past twenty years, although their most recent films are not anywhere near as good as their best. The film is a dark comedy thriller, and the film is tense and very entertaining, but what lifts it above the average is the genuine tenderness and heart with which the Coen's invest the film, mainly with the character of the unfailingly polite, and good-natured policewoman, who does provide the film with a strong moral centre, which is unusual in films of this type.

Todya at work was very quiet, probably with it being Friday and everyone being away early. By the time three o'clock rolled around, the office was nearly deserted. Before everyone left the conversation was mostly about how weird Tom Cruise seems to be getting recently. It's funny how people can get really obsessed by celebrities. I sometimes think people kind of envy them for their lifestyles and their money, and also people get bored with their own lives and with the celebrity gossip they can kind of live the lives of the rich and famous through proxy. I'm like that myslef. I'm constantly bored of my own life and that's one of the reasons I am interested, despite myself, in the 'celebrity news' on IMDb.com and of course in the unreal worlds of the movies and books.
